Mothering in the time of COVID-19

If there was a book on mothering in the time of COVID-19 I probably wouldn't have read it because I’m tired as a mother.  I cannot remember the last time I read for fun, especially now during a global f*cking pandemic.  For the last few months much of my job has been to closely track the evolution of the novel Coronavirus.  For those of you also following along, it is exhausting right?  Information, recommendations, and guidance change by what feels like the day.  There are only so many hours to read what’s published and process what information is worth retaining from the loads of misinformation not grounded in any scientific base.  For those of you not following Coronavirus, ignorance is bliss.  Where do I sign up?
March 16, 2020 was the day my sons’ daycare closed due to Coronavirus.  That date is cemented in my mind.  Their daycare wouldn’t open again for three months, with limited hours and availability once it did reopen.  But you know what?  I am so grateful they are open again and willing to implement the safety measures necessary to protect staff and children alike and allow us parents to get a much needed break from 24/7 parenting and focus solely on work.  I no longer have to pick the priority of the day: caring for my kids or meeting productivity standards to keep my job.  Because after all, if I don’t have a job, I don’t have income, and I can’t afford North Jersey daycare costs, which allow me to work and provide a comfortable life for my children.
For the first month of the pandemic I split my days half in the office and half at home working remotely.  I was able to switch my five day a week schedule to working four longer days with a day off to watch my sons so my husband could have a break from watching them and focus on keeping his job.  It wasn’t until a month into the pandemic that I think my work felt sorry for me and let me work three days remotely and one day in the office.  I visibly looked exhausted and overwhelmed and I stopped trying because I didn’t have any more energy to spare.  For a month my husband and I didn’t have any help.  All we had was each other and we tried to balance keeping our jobs while also taking care of our two little boys.  And each day I felt more and more pressure to perform at work because reopening post  COVID-19 is essential to maintaining employment.
I spent the first two months of the pandemic juggling being a mom and a worker bee and I’m ashamed to admit that I often put work first as I didn’t feel I had a choice.  During another Zoom meeting my eldest was calling for me and instead of going to him, I felt I had to stay present in the meeting to prove I was working diligently despite being remote.  My son was calling for me because he needed to go to the bathroom and needed my help.  I ignored him.  By not coming to his aid he had no choice, but to relieve his bowels in his diaper because young children, even those potty trained, are still learning bowel and bladder control.  I know shit happens, but that was unfair to him.  A lot of my choices were.  That was the catalyst to change my mind and attitude.
This experience has been one of the hardest experiences of my life.  I learned about myself and can now look back and appreciate the journey.  Work is necessary to survive, but my children are more important than anything.  Their happiness and well being should never come second, even to work, and especially during a pandemic.  I view the time as a blessing as I had the privilege of being able to spend time that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to with them for three long months.  Within days of daycare closing I was able to witness my baby successfully crawl and later cheer on his clumsy attempts at steps.  I was able to see my toddler transform into a baby saying a few short phrases to a “big little boy” who engages in full blown conversations.  Pre-Covid I was anti TV.  Post-Covid I’m pro TV and by any means necessary (that obviously doesn’t harm them).  Despite Paw Patrol and Fireman Sam on repeat, my toddler is still developing.  He is smart and tech savvy.  Just yesterday, he turned on the iPad, unlocked it, and opened YouTube Kids to watch trucks.  Not only did I get to spend time with the boys, but I also got to spend more time with my husband and watch him take on more of a primary caregiver role.  Despite all the pressure he felt juggling his work and parenthood, he never complained.  He suited up, stepped on home plate, and hit a grand slam every time.  I’m glad he’s my person and my copilot on this adventure.
Lastly, I learned to be more kind to myself.  I’m not a failure if I can’t get everything I set to accomplish done.  There will be many more times for me to outperform, but a pandemic isn’t the time.  Sometimes you have to ask for help and actually be ok relinquishing control.  Other times you have to advocate for yourself and reset expectations placed on you.  Self care is vital and I started making time for myself and the things that make me happy.  I went on long walks with my kids strapped in the stroller and slow strolls holding my eldest son’s hand on a search for trucks in all shapes and sizes.  I rode the Peloton most days of the week.   And I went to my zen place and baked everything and anything filled with sugar.  I started a garden and ate a ton of vegetables.   I also indulged in carrot cake and chocolate chip cookies because dessert makes me happy.   I started putting less pressure on myself and in turn experienced less guilt when I couldn’t meet my own expectations.  I’m doing the best I can and it’s enough.  All work and no play is not the way to successfully mother during a pandemic.
This pandemic isn’t over for many.  Luckily for us in New Jersey cases are at a low and hopefully they stay that way.  There is still no book on mothering in the time of COVID-19 and I definitely wouldn’t read it if it was available.  I’m still tired as a mother and imagine I will be for the next 17 years.  But I am grateful that my family and I have made it through the initial storm and came out stronger together.  I appreciate the lessons in the hardship and will keep striving to be the best mother I can be before all other responsibilities.

Happy Birthday Carter!

I have this cool picture frame at work from Artifact Uprising that holds 12 pictures.  Each morning when I come to work I move the picture from the day before to the back of the stack to reveal a new picture.  How fitting that our first family picture taken shortly after you were born is the picture of the day you were born.
This was hands down the happiest and proudest moment of my life.  You made me feel stronger, more important, and more loved than anyone else had ever made me feel in a matter of seconds.  And I never knew how much love I had in my heart until I held you for the first time and the you looked at me like you had known me and loved me for a lifetime.  Powerful stuff.

I remember where I was this exact moment 365 days ago.  I was still pregnant on my way to the hospital.  I had been feeling mild menstrual cramping and thought you would be coming in the next few days because, let's be real, latent labor can last for days and the first baby is on average 10 days late.  But no I was 4 cm, really feeling the strength of the contractions at this point, and off to the hospital I went.  And a few hours later you made your fast and furious appearance.  And not to brag, but my doctor did tell me how amazing I was.  Ok I had to brag a little...

This last year has been amazing.  You have grown so much.  You continue to be sweet and curious and make everyone around you crack up with your belly laughs.  You are starting to take "baby steps", walk run with assistance, and can stand on your own.  You say dada, mama, baba (bottle), hi, bye, and I'm convinced something along the lines of "I ruv youuu."  You blow kisses, wave, high five, and give hugs.  Probably my most favorite thing you do is stare at strangers and as soon as they look your way give the biggest, two bottom toothed grin and wave hello.  Clearly I'm going to have to start giving you the stranger danger talk!

I've also grown so much this last year.  You've taught me unconditional love, patience, and made me reevaluate what is important in this life.  I'm at such a good place and I have you to thank for it.  Thank you for inadvertently making me better and I will continue to try to achieve my best potential for you.

While I wish I could have stayed home with you I know you are at daycare having a blast with the other little swaddlers.  I'm sure right now you are either playing outside "weather permitting", having another snack, or getting into shenanigans.   I hope you have an amazing, fun filled day and can't wait to celebrate you tonight. You are the best son already. I love you forever and wish you endless joy and happiness.

Happy 1st Birthday Carter!  I love you!

My honest Tieks review

I wear ballet flats almost every day at work... Let's start over.

I wear the same pair of ballet flats almost every day at work: a silver pair of Vera Wang Lavender flats that I got years ago from Century 21.  They literally go with everything.  So needless to say I was on the hunt for a pair of ballet flats that are versatile enough to wear everyday and most importantly comfortable.  Now that it is warm(er), I try to go on a walk a few times a week during my lunch break to get a few minutes of fresh air and cardio.  Thus my shoes have to transition from office to walk and back to office without my feet hurting or leaving my feet covered in blisters.
I've heard about Tieks for awhile, but the cost hindered me from trying them out.  What changed my mind was the return policy.  A lot of websites appear to offer free shipping and returns, but when you read the fine print there is some stipulation, whether it is a fee for return shipping or stocking.  Not with Tieks!  So I took a chance and ordered the Rose Gold Glam Tieks that I had my eyes on.
First off the packaging is adorable.  Tieks are known for their Tiffany Blue soles and the packaging ties in with the color scheme perfectly.
Plus the flower detail is really stunning.  This is an an item that you can definitely repurpose.  The flower detail is on an elastic so it would be a gorgeous finishing touch to a gift as Tieks presents it or would look super cute in your little one's hair as a statement headband.  You're welcome.
First off I love the rose gold color.  It screams summer.  I also like that Tieks are foldable.  They come with a black dust bag that the flats fold into, which is a really nice touch.  Plus it allows you to carry these shoes in your purse without getting your purse covered in God knows what's on the ground and change into them as needed.
Now what I don't like...

I love that the soles are Tiffany Blue, but I really, really, really don't like the blue stripe down the back of these flats.  It cheapens the look.
As soon as I slipped these on my initial thought was: these are not the most comfortable flats I've ever tried.  Tieks need to be broken in and for $235 I don't know if they will truly become the most comfortable shoe once they form to my feet.  For that price tag I'm just not willing to risk keeping them and then regretting such an expensive purchase.   Plus the demarcation of my big toe is weird.  I feel like that would annoy me overtime.  So the Tieks had to go back.

The main reason I decided to review Tieks is that I did not see a single negative review while researching Tieks online and after trying them I wonder if more bloggers were offered some type of incentive for their glowing reviews.  I'm leaning towards yes considering the cheapest pair of Tieks go for $175, which is pricey! A few bloggers did admit that they were offered half off to review the Tieks and honestly I probably would have kept these Tieks for half off, but no incentive was offered.  For now I'm still on the hunt for the most comfortable flats that won't break the bank.  Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My Necklace That Always Impresses

Do you like my necklace?
Every time I wear this "sapphire and diamond flower necklace" I get compliment after compliment.  I pair it with my (real) sapphire studs and I would like to think it always accentuates my blue eyes.  Yesterday I wore this beauty to clinical / work and my friend's 9 year old asked me why I would wear such a pretty necklace to work?  "What if you loose it?" Duh!  Who wears expensive jewelry to work?  Why do kids always point out the obvious?  Too smart!

This necklace is from Netaya and it is 2 carats of "created blue sapphire gems and cubic zirconias" in sterling silver.  It retails for $39.
Netaya frequently has special discount promotions and today is your lucky day because select items, including this necklace, are 20% off when you use code SPRING20.  That means this beauty is a whooping $31.20.

Pictures do not do this necklace justice.  It is stunning and I promise you people will think you have a small fortune around your neck.  And let them think that, unless you are like me and you have to blab about the fabulous deal you scored.
Happy Friday and happy shopping!
